Since the 30-day visa exemption, China has become one of the easiest long-haul-feeling trips from Singapore: no visa forms, many direct flights, and a high-speed rail network that reaches places most visitors never see. Preparation matters more than for Japan, mainly for payments and apps.
Entry for Singapore passports
Singapore passport holders can enter China visa-free for up to 30 days for tourism, business or family visits, under a mutual exemption that began in February 2024. The 30 days cannot be extended, so plan your exit date carefully.
Set up before you go
- Alipay and WeChat Pay: install both, verify your identity and link a Visa or Mastercard. See the step-by-step guide to paying in China.
- Data: Google, WhatsApp and Instagram are blocked on Chinese networks. Singapore roaming and many travel eSIMs route data outside China, so these apps usually keep working; check with your provider.
- Apps: Amap (Gaode) for maps, Didi for rides (also inside Alipay), and Trip.com for trains and hotels in English.
When to go
- March to May and September to November are the most comfortable months in most regions.
- Avoid 1 to 7 October (National Day Golden Week) and Chinese New Year, when transport and sights are packed.
- Yunnan is mild all year at altitude; Harbin is for winter ice festivals.
Getting there from Singapore
Direct flights connect Singapore with Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Chongqing, Kunming, Xiamen and several other cities. For smaller places such as Dali, Lijiang or Guilin, fly to the nearest big city and continue by high-speed train or a domestic flight. The planner shows the options.
Getting around
High-speed trains are the best way between cities: fast, comfortable and often cheaper than flying for trips under five hours. Book through Trip.com or the official 12306 app with your passport, and arrive early; stations are large and have security checks.
Where to start
- First trip: Shanghai plus Hangzhou and Suzhou by train, or Beijing plus Xi'an.
- Nature and slow travel: Yunnan: Kunming, Dali and Lijiang. See the 10-day Yunnan itinerary.
- Food: Chengdu and Chongqing for Sichuan cooking.
